FINAL EXAM INFORMATION:
Our final exam is optional. If you choose not to complete it, your essay score from your Hamlet analysis essay will also count as your final exam score. If you choose to complete it, you MUST complete EACH of the following steps:
1. Go through your returned Hamlet essay. Pay close attention to remarks, comments, grading rubric, etc.
2. Prepare a Self Reflection consisting of three specific things you should do to improve that essay (each one should be explained in at least three sentences).
3. Meet with me for a conference during class Wednesday or Thursday, or after school Wednesday, or before school Thursday. I AM UNAVAILABLE FOR CONFERENCES AFTER SCHOOL ON THURSDAY. In the conference, we will go through your self reflection and discuss specific changes that must be made to score well.
4. Bring your new, revised version to me and we will score it together on Friday DURING CLASS. You must have your original essay, your original rubric, AND you should UNDERLINE ALL CHANGES in the new version. We will score it together and that score will count as your final exam grade.

Record the following information (probably on notebook paper since we have been having printer issues!): 1. Article Title 2. Author 3. Original Source 4. Date 5. Lexile level 6. Resource type (journal article, news article, editorial, etc.) 7. Your initial thoughts on the article. Agree? Disagree? Other information you would want? Summary of article? -HW: Read How to Read a Journal Article and be prepared to discuss and put to use during class tomorrow! |

-Writing into the Day -Discuss "How to Read a Journal Article" assignment -Critical Reading Checklist -UNILearning: Reading a Journal Article Efficiently SAMPLE ARTICLE If absent, use the document and attached article to practice reading a journal article critically. Answer the following questions: 1. Preview: Make notes about author and credibility! Are these authors credible for this topic? Why/Why not? Which sections will need to be focused on? Why? Other thoughts? 2. Abstract: Read the abstract. Make notes about what the article will be about and main points to look for. 3. Introduction: Read the introduction. Summarize main points. 4. Methods: Describe the research methods. 5. Results: Summarize their results. 6. Discussion: How do they interpret the results? 7. YOUR conclusions: After reading the article, what are your thoughts? Agree? Disagree? More research needed? Why/Why not? 8. Use the Critical Reading Checklist to address several other questions. |

-Writing into the Day -Writing Workshop: This I Believe essay PEER REVISION ROUND 1 1. Receive Personal Belief Statements back 2. Create an "Author's Agenda" (What one or two things do you want the most help/work on?) Write this at the top. 3. With a partner, you read theirs and they read yours completing the following comments (yes, write on the draft!) -Pointing: Underline one part (sentence, word, line, etc.). Complete one of the following phrases: "I enjoy...because..." "I wonder what would happen here if..." -Question: Underline a different part. Ask them a specific question about that part. (What do you mean? Could you elaborate? What happened next? Etc.) -Say Back: As a responder, tell them what you hear in their piece as a while. (I hear...is important to you because...; I hear that you believe...because...; I hear that...impacted you in...way; I hear...was hard for you because... -Address Author's Agenda: Give them feedback on the things they want help with most -TALK about these things with your partnerConsider any or all of them as you continue drafting. |
