There can be things that are "fun scary" (walking through a haunted house, going to a horror movie, riding a roller coaster) and then there's "scary scary" (being in a car accident, getting locked out of your house as a child). Describe the scariest experience you've ever had. Was it fun scary, or was it really terrifying?

"The best education in the world is that got by struggling to get a living." -Wendell Phillips
Many students sick of high school make arguments similar to Phillips's. Do you agree with Phillips that hard work provides the best education, or do you think success is more likely for those people who receive a traditional education?

Good Luck Charms: These can range from stones to coins to horseshoes to four leaf clovers or a lucky rabbit's foot. Some people carry personal objects that they consider lucky, like a certain rubber band, picture, coin, etc. Do you have a good luck charm? Do you consider the idea of luck to be worthwhile or a silly fantasy? What makes you believe or be skeptical?

When you're young, it seems like your parents have some kind of official book that explains everything they need to know. Do you remember a specific instance when you realized that your parents were confused, scared, or irrational? How did you feel realizing that? Write about that instance OR make up a story.

In the novel Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, each chapter begins with a recipe that gradually turns into a narrative that tells a story. For example, one chapter begins with instructions for preparing Christmas rolls and then goes on to tell a story about a memorable holiday.
Think of a food that provokes strong emotion in you, perhaps because it reminds you of your childhood or because you were eating it when something dramatic happened. Taking Esquivel's pattern as a model, write the recipe for this food, and gradually transition into a narrative, explaining why the food is meaningful to you. Include lots of descriptive, sensory adjectives!

What do you think about censorship, especially in today's internet society? Citizens of the United States are guaranteed the right to free speech, but many Americans feel that this right sometimes comes under attack. Have you seen evidence of this around you? If not, have you read about anything that could be construed as censorship occurring in the United States? Elsewhere? What about online postings? Should people be able to post whatever they want, even if it offends? Why/Why not?

Technology: It has led to the discovery of vaccines and medical treatments; it has brought computers and televisions into people's homes in ways never before imagined (other than by sci-fi writers!) and has given us electricity, the internet, phones, cars, planes, and much more. BUT...some could argue that technology has largely worsened the quality of our lives, polluting the air, making our lives stressful, interfering with our ability to interact face-to-face and discouraging things like books. What do you think about technology? Has it been good or bad? If you HAD to give up one piece of technology you use frequently, what would it be? Do you think you'd be better off without it? How would your world be different without it?

To others it might look like junk, but you know it's precious: maybe it's the beat-up stuffed animal you slept with every night as a kid, the raggedy baseball mitt you used for Little League, the tooth you and Mom couldn't bear to throw away after it fell out (sorry, ew!). Think about the things you have written about as goals and outcomes you hope to accomplish in your life. Now, brainstorm a list of possible obstacles or challenges that could be difficult to overcome.
Make a list, then choose one or two to write about. How will you overcome these challenges? What steps can you take to avoid them completely?

Make an "Expert List" AKA a list of ALL the things you are good at or could be considered an "Expert" about. List as many as you can come up with in the time provided.
My examples:
Teaching English, being an OSU Buckeyes fan, soccer, falling down, having technical problems with computers, being a good listener, having fun with my friends, quoting Friends episodes, getting math problems wrong...

View the following music video "Hall of Fame" (The Script ft. Will.I.Am.)
While watching and listening, make a list of things that will make up your individual "Hall of Fame"...in other words, how will you know when you have 'made it'? What are your own personal goals for life and your idea of what will be a successful future for you? Write about what you would like your future to look like. Include goals for the short term (this year, 2 years, etc.) and long term (5 years, 10 years, 20 years from now). Make sure to think about family, school, career, etc.
